Google.com is pretty self explanatory. Right? If you said yes, there’s a good chance you’re not using Google to its full potential.

Recently, I found that there’s this complete underground world of mind-blowing search tools for Google, never before mentioned to me. The infographic says that three out of every four students couldn’t perform a “well-executed search”. Typing “regular show death punchies” instead of simply “regular show” does not constitute a well-executed search. Instead, there’s a whole list of tildes, brackets, and quotation points that can tweak a search for better or worse.

With midterm papers beginning to breath down my back, this information will be quite beneficial. Being able to use Google properly won’t guarantee me residency on the Dean’s List. But here’s to wishful thinking. [Via]

Technology and education go hand in hand in our modern society. Even high school students can’t survive without a computer. Computers are used to research for projects, type papers and assignments and to chat with friends on facebook;). With the introduction of the iPad, Apple has had the vision to use the iPad to innovate the way schools use technology.

Apple has introduced a software to create textbooks for the iPad. High school students can now obtain textbooks on their iPad, instead of recieving hard copy textbooks. The cost is a big deterrent to implementing this new way to access schoolwork. To start fresh, using textbooks is 41% cheaper than iPads. This is a huge cost increase for an institution that is currently facing major budget cuts that have lead to teacher layoffs.

How do you feel about iPad textbooks? I personally understand the benefits to college use, cutting the high textbook costs for students, considering how many college students already have iPads, but I don’t see the practicality for high school students. What do you think? [Via]

So apparently at some point in humanity’s short existence there was this thing called the radio and people used to listen to it for things like plays, book readings, and SPORTS! If you’re shocked by the previous sentence I don’t blame you, today’s technology gives us so many alternatives to radio. Although recent studies show radio listeners are growing in numbers once again, me being one of those thanks to Austin’s comedy radio station 102.7. In today’s internet driven society social media has climbed to the top as the number one source for the average person’s sports fix. I leave you with two things I found interesting in today’s infographic, social media is used most by those watching the game on television. Secondly, sport social media junkies do not seem to mind advertisements. Example being someone you follow on Twitter plugging a product, as the infographic says “they’d probably feel different if it was being e-mailed to them.” [via]

This infographic, I must confess, did comfort me. As a child I was subjected to such embarrassment. Many painful memories reiterate how torturous this condition is… but I was not alone. Not by far.

Yeah, I’m admitting it: I wet the bed until I was eight years old.

Maybe it’s silly to admit that to the internet, but I’ll be frank: I really don’t care. Chances are, you (the reader) have probably pissed your bed at one point or another. Yes, one hundred per-cent of us wet the bed when we were young.

Yeah, so I only fit into ten per cent of 8 year olds who wet the bed, but c’mon, I was a weird kid.

And I don’t know if any of you had this experience, but I distinctly remember a wetness-sensing electro-shock device being implanted in my bed past a certain age… That seems a little cruel to me now, maybe it prolonged the problem? Who knows?
In any case, don’t put such a machine in your child’s mattress. They’re scary! (via)

There is nothing more relaxing than putting on your earphones and submersing yourself in music. But when I can hear someone else’s music, while listening to my own music, then you have got to turn the music down for the sake of your ears!

The ear is one of the most delicate organs of our bodies. With over 15,000 noise transferring hair cells in each ear, we definitely have more than enough hairs to spare. But once they’re gone, they’re gone! If you can’t hear a person talking 3 feet away from you, then you could be slowly butchering your ears to a hairless conch.

I can recall the days I would drive with my brother, him on the passenger side with his ear buds in listening to his music on full blast. I could hear every single word and guitar riff all the way on the driver side. I couldn’t get a word in through all the music being pumped full blast into his ears.

Today’s infographic allows you to gauge what daily sounds could potentially damage your delicate ears. So next time, be weary when you stand in front of the giant speakers at your next concert or raise the volume on your ipod; your ears will thank you later.

As this year’s presidential race heats up it is always good to take a look back at some of our country’s previous leaders. Today’s infographic shows the two most recent and two least recent presidents, as well as where they took up residency throughout their lives. As for myself, I can only call Texas and Louisiana my home. I don’t feel bad though. George Washington only lived in 3 states, and I’ve got a good chance I’ll stick around his number.

Another interesting aspect of today’s graphic is how much Obama and Bush have traveled compared to the founding fathers. We have become a nation of fifty different states that span thousands of miles. There is no surprise that good guy George couldn’t traverse the present US with such limited technology. Modern travel is so amazing our current president has resided in areas like Hawaii, New York City and the two most important Washingtons: State and DC.

Bush is not as worldly as Obama and has only resided in Texas outside New England. He got to see the different sides of the lone star state from our desert to the sea. I’m sure he’s ridden the West Texas sands dunes, experience Houston’s hellish humidity and did whatever there’s to do in Dallas, but I’m not sure if his time in Texas helped his foreign policy.

There are a lot of different cultures within America and having a president that has experienced a few different ones is a must for me. I’d like to see some other presidential residential maps to see if any of them can compare to newest Mr. President.

Today, I am going to admit one of my faults. I have a tendency to leave unfinished food on my plate and I allow some food to spoil before I finish it. While I work to minimize this fault, there’s no doubt I do it and the little scraps of food add up to several meals over the years. My U.S. culture never quite emphasized the importance of conserving food and minimizing waste, but at the school dining halls I read facts about waste, and it definitely opens my perspective. Food waste takes up the most space in the landfills, and the majority of it is once delicious food that could have been enjoyed by someone. I have increased my awareness in my kitchen, cooking only a realistic amount of food that I am sure I will consume. It’s hard to be perfect, but little changes can make large differences in the food waste industry.

Recycling is another great way to help with minimal effort. If you live in a large apartment complex, most areas have laws that require the complex to have a recycling option. So if your building does not have it, talk to someone in charge about recycling. Recycling and finishing your dinner are two simple tasks that take hardly any extra time, so do them.[Via]

Here is a little Valentine’s Day wrap up as you recover from your candy and love hangovers.

Today’s infographic begins with a short history of Valentine’s Day, a history that traces back to ancient Rome with Lupercalia, a fertility festival and touches on a few high points as the holiday slowly takes on its present shape. This history is in no way exhaustive, but it does beg the question: how in the world did the modern Valentine’s Day, a holiday predominantly about expensive jewelry, cut flowers and Hallmark cards, come about?

Next, the infographic tackles average Valentine’s Day expenses and trends. And, it shines a light on the inordinate amount of Sweetheart candies produced annually. I think someone needs to take a stand against Sweethearts. Those things are not good.

If you are one of the 62% of adults who claim to celebrate the holiday, I hope it was a good one, and if you’re not, well, Tuesday’s over and we are one day closer to the weekend! [via]

Happy Valentine’s Day, Infographers! Although many criticize this day as a hallmark holiday, I have always viewed it as a day to celebrate the friends, family and loved ones in your life. While one shouldn’t need a holiday to express love, it sometimes helps remind you to slow it down and recognize all of the love in our busy lives. Lets get to loving!

Flowers are such a sweet gift for both lovers and friends. Flowers smell beautifully, look fresh and natural and don’t add a layer of valentines day fat to your hips. This infographic sheds some light on proper floral etiquette. So guys, bring some daises for your office, give your girlfriend dahlias, your boyfriend orchids (for virility HA HA). And remember, red roses are for love, yellow are for friendship and BLACK are for hate, so don’t show up with the wrong color or you could be going home alone.

With Valentine’s Day around the corner I thought I would go ahead and share this infographic I found. I’m not sure if I believe this, but according to today’s infographic Retailer’s Get Their Heart-On For Valentine’s Day people are expected to spend $17 billion. Simply because of the nature of the “holiday” it is not surprising to see that men are projected to spend twice as much as women come this Tuesday. Although the popularity of shopping at discount stores for gifts is decreasing it still remains the number one source for gifts for your significant other.

However you feel about Valentine’s Day today’s infographic has some pretty interesting facts and figures. I’m sure soon enough online shopping will gain some ground on discount stores, but then that would require some planning on the buyer’s part.
