The Shapes Of Stories by Vonnegut

By | source: Apr 10th, 2014

Leave it to Kurt Vonnegut to point out something that seems like it should have been painfully obvious. I’ve spent a lot of time sitting in class looking at sine waves, but never did I look at one and think “Yeah, that’s pretty much life”.

Most of us have probably heard that Albert Einstein quote, “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.”. Funny enough, not only does Vonnegut look eerily similar to Einstein, but he is a master of this principle. If you do a quick Google search for “Kurt Vonnegut’s writing advice”, you’ll see that almost all the tips he has pretty much boil down to: say as much as you can with as few words as possible. Some things are very strong in their simplicity, and though this isn’t a universal rule, Vonnegut certainly has proven how far a little restraint can go.

Even though Vonnegut is known to be pretty straightforward he’s also a very funny guy. Be sure to check out this video of Vonnegut himself explaining the shapes you see in this infographic.
