The car vs bike war has been going strong for a long time in America. Forums and comment sections across the globe erupt in cycling hate. As a cyclist myself I’m going to write an extreamly biased post. Buckle your seat-belts.
The number one argument against cyclists is always “you guys need to stop at stop signs and stop running red lights!”. In the grand scheme of things cars do this much more often. Just think about it for a moment. Also a bike running a light or stop sign is extreamly less dangerous than a car doing the same. The Idaho Stop is a law in some states which lets bicycles treat stop signs as a yield and stoplights as stop signs. This improves road safety and congestion to both cyclists and drivers. Cyclists get to conserve energy allowing them to be faster and also get to position themselves in front of vehicles to improve visibility and safety.
Another aspect of this war between commuters is the ‘don’t knock it until you try it’. Less than 1% of drivers are cyclists. 99% of cyclists are also drivers. Cycling is a healthy, and arguably faster way to commute in cities. You should have no excuse not to cycle if you’re office is less than 10 miles away. Take a look at our infographic below and get over your fears! Cycling is liberating. Oh, and wear a helmet.
