Knowing how to tie and untie different kinds of knots can prepare you for a lot of different situations. Especially if you’re a lover of the outdoors, you should know how to tie at least a few basic knots.
Most of us only use the kind of knot you use to tie your shoes, however, there is a wide variety of knots you’d need to know depending on the type of activity you plan on doing. For example, camping, fishing, hiking, and sailing all call for very specific types of knots. Depending on your activity, you could need a very particular type of knot that is unique to that activity.
If you’re fishing, you could use a blood knot to tie two fishing lines together. This is much different than if you were hiking and needed to secure the ropes to trees, rocks, or poles. In this case, you could use two half hitches. Using the wrong type of knot could land you in a dangerous situation because some knots are meant to hold more weight and stay tied tight, while some are meant to untie easily.
Even if you’re not planning on being out in the wilderness anytime soon, it’s still a good skill to know and it can even be fun to learn too.
