Know Your Food Allergies

By | source: Nov 12th, 2014

It seems as though food allergies have become more prevalent in the last few years. When my mother first told me she had celiac disease, I didn’t understand what she was talking about. I thought it might be something she could get rid of, but that’s not the case with most food allergies. After learning that celiac disease was basically a gluten sensitivity, I began to understand that my mom would have to make a lifestyle change if she wanted to feel better.

While food allergies are different for everyone, nearly 15 million Americans are living with them. According to the infographic, food allergies affect 1 in every 13 children, a number that has been increasing over the last 20 years. Although these numbers are significant, they don’t necessarily encompass those people who suffer from sensitivities or intolerances to certain allergy-inducing foods.

The eight most common foods that cause an allergic reaction include milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish and shellfish. I have been lactose intolerant for as long as I can remember, but I am currently trying to determine if I am sensitive to gluten or dairy through an elimination diet. Being dairy free is especially hard, but I’ve been learning a lot about myself and how my body reacts to certain foods.

If you’re worried that you might be suffering from a food allergy or sensitivity, do your research and talk to your healthcare provider. Don’t let food allergies prevent you from enjoying your meals.
