Bridges can be long, tall or wide due to their purpose, location or size of their bodies of water. The longest bridges in the world are often located in Asia due to their extensive networks of rivers and lakes; however, some notable bridges are located in Europe and North America as well
You may not realize it, but you cross a bridge almost every day. Bridges are used to cross rivers, valleys, or other gaps. They must be built to be strong and stable so that they can support the weight of the cars and trucks that use them on a regular basis. Without bridges, we would have to take long detours around these gaps in order to travel from one place to another. Bridges are also used as connecting pieces between two places. For example, if there were no bridge over the Mississippi River between Iowa and Minnesota, people living in those states could not easily visit each other because there would be no direct route for traveling between their homes. A bridge can be made out of many different materials including steel cables (like suspension bridges), wood planks (like covered bridges), concrete pillars (like viaducts) or even rope (like rope swings).
