This was a great year for movies and the highest grossing films were no exception. I’m going to list the top ten highest grossing films in order of their worldwide earnings, followed by a brief description of each one.
Mario Bros. Movie ($574.9M)
The highest grossing film of 2023 is Mario Bros. Movie, which stars John Leguizamo as Luigi and Bob Hoskins as Mario. The story follows the titular characters as they try to save their family business from King Koopa (played by Dennis Hopper). Mario Bros. Movie received mixed reviews from critics, but was financially successful nonetheless. It grossed $574.9M worldwide on its opening weekend alone!
Spider-Man Across the Spider-verse ($381.3M)
Spider-Man Across the Spider-verse is a superhero film released on June 10, 2023. It was directed by David Fincher and produced by Sony Pictures Entertainment. The script was written by David Fincher and James Vanderbilt. Spider-Man Across the Spider-verse stars Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy/Ghost Spider and Jamie Foxx as Miles Morales/Prowler in lead roles with Mahershala Ali playing Kingpin (Wilson Fisk), Zendaya playing Michelle Jones / Ms Marvel & Elizabeth Banks playing Mary Jane Watson / Scarlet Spider.
Guardians of The Galaxy Volume 3 ($358.9M)
The third installment of this Marvel franchise was released in May, 2023. It was directed by James Gunn and starred Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora and Vin Diesel as Groot. The film has a worldwide gross of $358.9 million, making it the third highest grossing film of 2023 and breaking records for opening weekend sales at over $200 million!
Oppenheimer ($324.4M)
You’ve probably heard of this film. It was released in 2023, and it stars Brad Pitt, Robert De Niro and Josh Brolin. The director is Christopher Nolan (who also directed Inception). The film is based on the novel of the same name by J. Robert Oppenheimer–the physicist who led the Manhattan Project during World War II to develop nuclear weapons for use against Nazi Germany. During his time at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico during World War II, Oppenheimer became involved with many scientists who would go on to become prominent leaders in their fields: Hans Bethe and Edward Teller among them. The budget for the movie was $200 million dollars–but it grossed over $324 million worldwide!
The Little Mermaid ($298.1M)
The Little Mermaid is a live action remake of the classic Disney film. It stars the Little Mermaid and her friends as they travel across the ocean in search of true love. The film grossed $298.1M at the box office, making it one of the highest grossing films ever made.
