No, it isn’t at all. It’s not the same thing as personality. If you wanna be a game-changer and an original, you have to be GOOD first. You don’t just do whatever the fuck you want and expect it to look okay to anyone but you. Design is constructed, and it is communication. It is expressive, yes, but if you just want to express yourself willy nilly why are you looking up guides in the first place? Learning to be good lets you play with the rules and express yourself eloquently. It’s the same reason we learn a language – if you know the rules, you know how to communicate. And you can learn how and when to break them. Originality is pretty much non existant anyway – seeking to be original is a waste of time.

Being yourself is not the same as being original, anyway. I like pancakes. So does most everyone I know. But I still like them, even though it’s “normal”. Most people are normal, most of the time. Most design guidelines should be followed, most of the time. That’s what makes the “weird” moments WORK.
