I’ll admit it. I’m not much of a Star Wars fan. I tried to watch the first movie and ended up falling asleep halfway through. Even though I can’t appreciate George Lucas’s genius, I do love the ridiculously cool costumes.
What would actually happen if Darth Vader came to life, though? It turns out it’d cost $18.3 million to make a Darth Vader suit, which is a pretty shocking figure.
Most of that comes from the base suit, because withstanding exposure to space isn’t cheap. Much like an astronaut, Vader would have to be prepared for non-earthly conditions.
Another high cost: prosthetic limbs. In Revenge of the Sith (spoiler alert!), Anakin Skywalker loses his arm and legs. By the next movie, he was able to move normally. Maintaining those prosthetics would cost a whopping $5.4 million.
Darth Vader is most famous for his voice. Surprisingly, that’d be the cheapest part of the suit. A high-end synthesizer would cost $1,000.
