Sometimes, as children, we may take our public education for granted. However, it is no doubt incredibly important to our society as today’s infographic shows.
Today’s infographic highlights public schooling in the United States. Public schooling has evidently been very beneficial to the general populace, with the percentage of US adults aged 25+ who hold a high school diploma increasing at an impressive rate over the past 60 or so years. Along with this, student achievement in every major racial and ethnic group is higher than it was in the 1970s.
While all of this information is great to hear, there is still work ahead to equalize the outcome for every group of people. There are still clear discrepancies in graduation rates amongst various demographics. For instance, it is far still likelier for a middle-class white student to graduate at a standard pace than it is for, say, a Native American student or an economically disadvantaged student to graduate at the standard pace.
In the future, policymakers should surely aim to remedy this discrepancy and other issues with the system however they can. Doing this will allow our school system to take another large leap as we continue to progress ahead as a country.
