I’m a sucker for romantic comedies. “When Harry Met Sally” is one of the best movies ever made, no doubt. But how realistic are rom coms? Do they leave us with impractical expectations?
According to this infographic, rom coms stay away from realistic relationship obstacles. For example, 78% of people have loved someone who didn’t feel the same way about them. This only happens in 6% of romantic comedies.
Interestingly enough, having a friendship turn into something more is a common way for people to fall in love, with 72% of people finding love like that in real life. (It’s how I found my husband!) That only happens in 7% of movies.
Also worth noting: Only one popular romantic movie focuses on online dating. With 48% of people having tried online dating, it definitely doesn’t line up with real life.
Obviously, this doesn’t mean it’s time to throw away your copy of “Never Been Kissed.” Just be aware that movies don’t always reflect real life, even if they seem realistic.
