Pearls are a gorgeous natural gem that has been used as jewelry for thousands of years. They’ve been worn by queens and princesses throughout history, and they’re still one of the most popular jewelry items today. There’s no doubt about it: pearls are an elegant choice for any occasion. But where do pearls come from? Why are they so beautiful? And how can you tell if your pearl is real or fake? Well, this guide will answer all of those questions—and more!

There are many different types of pearls, but the most common are Akoya pearls (also known as Japanese freshwater pearls), South Sea pearls and Tahitian Pearls. Each has its own unique appearance, texture and history. Akoya Pearls are cultivated in Japan from oysters that naturally produce them in their mantle tissue. They’re typically white or cream-colored with a metallic luster or iridescence when viewed under magnification; this is due to the presence of nacre (the substance that makes up the shell). Because they’re grown using modern techniques–and therefore don’t require any human intervention after being harvested–they have become increasingly popular over time due to their affordability compared with other types of cultured gems like diamonds or sapphires which can cost thousands upon thousands per carat depending on quality level (color grade).

Pearls come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The most common are round, baroque and button-shaped pearls. There are also oval, teardrop and drop shapes that you can find on the market today. Pearl size varies greatly depending on what kind of pearl you’re looking at ( Akoya / South Sea ) but they range from 2mm to 10mm in diameter; larger pearls tend to be more valuable than smaller ones because they are harder to find! Pearls can be any color under the sun – white, pinkish-orange (called “coral”), blackish-gray (known as “black”) or even purple!

Pearls have been used as jewelry for thousands of years. They are natural, organic and beautiful–and they’re also formed when a foreign particle gets inside an oyster or mussel and irritates the animal, causing it to secrete a substance around the particle. That’s how pearls form!
