Why People Are Going Vegan

By | source:Here Jan 17th, 2021

The industrialized age and increased access to information have made people more and more health-conscious. Among many other eating trends, veganism has been gaining more and more popularity for the last two decades. Like many other trends, veganism may be either absolute or partial.

Complete abstinence from animal source foods is absolute veganism. However, some people abstain from meat, while others don’t consume dairy products and eggs as well.

Health consciousness is one (but not the only) reason behind more and more people going vegan. Some other common reasons are based on religion, environmental impacts of livestock farming, increased awareness of animals’ rights, and even inspiration from social media and celebrity endorsements.

Here are some interesting statistics about veganism

  • Vegans are 35% less likely to develop prostate cancer.
  • India has the world’s largest vegans population, both numerically and percent wise with 39% (next comes Israel with 13 %).
  • The average beef and veal consumption per week per person in the U.K. has decreased from 215 grams in 1975 to 102 grams in 2015.
  • Vegan health studies show that veganism can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by as much as 23%.
  • In the U.S., between 2017 and 2019, plant-based product sales grew by 31.3%.

The future of veganism seems very bright. An increased health consciousness, awareness to protect animals, and availability of a variety of vegan food in the market are sure to make veganism progress in the near as well as the distant future.
