Have you ever wanted to be in front of a video camera? Maybe a reality show star? Surprisingly, you’re filmed on over 200 different cameras everyday, but this is no Survivor. CCTV or closed circuit television are the cameras at stoplights, on walls, and in stores that watch your every move to make sure you’re being a model citizen. In the UK it is estimated that there is a CCTV camera for every 14 citizens. Maybe I’m thinking too much like George Orwell, but those statistics are scary.
We don’t only need to blame others for our lack of privacy, you yourself put out tons of personal info on the web. I’m sure you’ve heard about Facebook’s privacy issues and as much as I would like to look at your BBQ pictures from last night, I don’t know you that well. Here is a guide to change your privacy settings on Facebook to something you can agree with. By the way Mom, when you read this remember to change your Facebook settings if you haven’t already. I don’t want people to creep on me through you!
Google is one of my favorite companies ever, but I’m going to tell you something that could surprise you. Google knows more about you than your closest friend, your overbearing parent and even your dog. Imagine everything you’ve searched in Google. Yeah, I bet it’s some embarrassing stuff. Although Google just recently started to anonymize their server logs, they don’t do it for up to 24 months after the search. I reckon it’s a step in the right direction, and Google is the first search company to do it, but it’s still a bit creepy. [Via]
