Can you believe Christmas is this Sunday? It feels like just yesterday I was sitting down to stuff my face full of turkey for Thanksgiving. With the gift giving holiday I’m sure a lot of you have last minute shopping on the mind. Today’s infographic outlines the psychology behind different shopping habits and the different types of social commerce associated with each. It’s a pretty cool infographic, what category do you fall in?

On a different note Kim Jong-il is dead. For those who don’t know he was the leader of North Korea, a potential nuclear threat. His death could prove to cause instability within an already volatile country. Who knows what his son, the name heir, will do in order to prove his power. [via]

Space Waste [infographic]

Usually, the term “space exploration” or the idea of people venturing into space has been associated with innovation, education, and groundbreaking new discoveries.

While all of this is absolutely dandy, no one seems to ponder what happens too all the junk left in space from these glorious missions.

Currently, figures for this thick ribbon of “space waste” pale in comparison to the horrific masses of garbage here on Earth. It’s safe to suppose we are all very aware of that issue by now. Most of us have heard of what is now being called The Great Pacific Garbage Patch… yet no one has yet heard of Earth’s Trashy New Belt.

Not only is this another glaring example of humankind’s pension to destroy all things beautiful, but it is a relevant and very dangerous problem. Lest we forget, in space, garbage doesn’t just sit there—it hurtles around the globe at extreme speeds.

The more human-made objects whizzing around in this belt, the more likely deadly collisions become. Current as well as future missions to space will doubtlessly be affected by this lethal band of hyper-fast trash. [via]

Schools Out, But The Doctor’s In [infographic]

No matter how easy to avoid it’s said to be, college students are still finding ways to contract STD’s. I know that life happens to even the best of us, but according to the alarming statistics in the infographic below, “life” is happening to a lot more students than I thought.

Trojan Brand Condoms studied 141 major colleges and compiled a report card rating the schools from best to worst in sexual health. This recent study also showed that 1 out of every 4 students have an STD.

25% of students having an STD sounded outlandish to me at first. I don’t think I can even name 1 of my friends who have an STD. But I also figured that not everyone would share their personal health information so freely, especially with something of that magnitude. The infographic also gives four tips to improve your sexual health, one of which was “use protection”. Shocker.

I personally think the numbers are a bit off the mark, but STD’s on college campuses are still a major concern of mine. And there were some surprise schools listed in the top half of the report card.  What do you think? Gripe, complain, air your grievances! [Via]

Is Pepper Spray that Bad? [infographic]

So we have all seen the picture of our favorite police officer nonchalantly causing some of the most excruciating discomfort to some immobile students. The media went crazy over this. The police said that the students had surrounded the officers and there was no escape so they pepper sprayed their way out.

Now I have seen the video and it is true, students did surrond the officers with their arms linked. Whether or not this was threatening enough for use of force is another story. The officers did warn the students many times they would be pepper sprayed if they didn’t move. The students didn’t move. Well surprise, surprise when they were pepper sprayed.

Pepper spray is horrible. The police should have grabbed the students and arrested them. Between batons and tasers the crowd never would of even thought of overrunning the officers. In the end the officers were wrong to use a classified chemical weapon against civilians and are being scrutinized by the nation for it. [Via]

The Sweet Tooth [infographic]

The holidays are coming, and sweet treats are inevitable. Gingerbread men, candy canes, pies, oh my! Even a health nut like myself can enjoy diving into pounds of sugary goodness on christmas. My personal favorite is pumpkin pie, I could eat a whole pie in one sitting.

My recommendation for the holidays is to eat a substantial meal before thinking about sweets. You’ll eat less of them on a full stomach. I find that they’re still just as delicious after a big meal! Here’s a good time to throw a statistic out there: 90% of people from the U.S. are chronically dehydrated! If you’re not taking clear and copious trips to the restroom every hour, consider drinking some water. Another suggestion is to buy organic candy, it’s really good for you because it’s from nature. (not confirmed)

If you’ve got a 50 pound bag of candy, be sure to stay away from Idaho. The 5-0 will get you. There’s actually a lot of things you can get in trouble for having 50 pounds of. Anyhow, enjoy the holiday treats and comment below with your biggest sweet tooth craving. [Via]
