The Life and Times of Steve Jobs [infographic]

“Stay hungry, stay foolish.” One of my favorite Steve Jobs quotes.

For the last few minutes I’ve been staring at my Macbook, thinking about what I should say about one of the most inspirational figures in my life. I thought about sharing my close connection with Apple products, and how I felt when I finally “made the switch” to mac in college. I thought about watching Toy Story for the first time and being amazed at the innovation in animation. I also considered writing about my job at Mutual Mobile where I help companies develop custom mobile applications on iPhones and iPads, and how my job wouldn’t exist if Steve had never been born. But what I really wanted to share, was why Steve was such an inspiration for me.

Steve believed in creating value above all things. Everything he ever worked on was focused on creating something that didn’t exist before. He was crazy to try and change the world, but he was brilliant enough to do it, multiple times. Steve believed in creating products that users would need, not ones they think they want. He was authoritative, brave, intelligent and revelutionary. I encorage everyone to learn from Steve’s life. This infographic gives a great overview. Thanks to Infographic World, for providing it.

The Reddit Invasion [infographic]

I’d like to start today with a moment of silence for the Longhorns. Hate to admit the Sooners were quite better than us this year, but I’m optimistic of the future. Anyway today’s infographic The Reddit Invasion provides us with a brief timeline outlining the history of the website along with other interesting facts. If you haven’t visited Reddit you should check it out sometime, when you’re not passing your time on our site that is. In a nutshell it’s a bunch of links of trending or cool things on the internet that people decided were worth sharing.

If you’re always feeling like the last to know things this site will really help you out. Reddit was founded by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian when they were 22 years old. They then sold the company to Conde Nast for $20 million who added the ability for everyone to create their own subreddit. In 2008, the same year subreddit were added, Reddit went open source as well.

Can I get Cancer from Oral Sex? [infographic]

Today’s infographic is something I don’t think many of us know about. HPV has been in the headlines for the last few years, but it has always been focused on getting girls vaccinated. Now with almost a 30% increase in male oral cancers since 1988, researchers believe upper throat cancer will pass cervical cancer as the country’s main human papillomavirus related cancer in the next 10 years.

This teaches us one thing about American society: we like to put our mouths on things, but cancer is no laughing matter. Like all cancer, early detection is key. With almost a 90% survival rate of throat cancer it would’nt seem too bad, but still thousands are victims every year.

In my state of Texas, girls are required by law to be vaccinated for HPV before they enter middle school. With these new statistics, I wonder if a male vaccine will ever be a mandatory prevention.

Competitive Eating [infographic]

In case you didn’t know, eating cheeseburgers is kinda my thing. Sometimes I like to think of it as a competition as I pile on additional patties.

Competitive eating is much more serious than just ordering a double-double cheeseburger. It is about putting long, hard hours of training in and fighting harder week after week. It is also important to have proper supplies and equipment when dealing with this sport. You may laugh at these people for being “ridiculous” or “freaks of nature”, but the truth is these people put in lots of energy and heart into their profession. So maybe evaluate yourself before trying to evaluate these hard-working souls.

I found the facts presented below to be pretty fascinating, who knew somebody could eat 20,000 calories in one sitting. And I thought I was a hungry person… [Via]

Why You Are an STD Risk [infographic]

I was listening to a local independent radio station recently, and right after the Black Keys song I’d heard a million times they played a commercial I had never heard. The commercial alleged that Sexually Transmitted Diseases are a growing concern in my city, hit me with some frightening statistics, and then allowed me to get back to the next overplayed indie hit. I can appreciate the need to spread the word that if you have sex or sit on compromised toilet seats, you should be aware of the risks. Today’s infographic aims to do just that, with more detailed information and statistics.

Scanning the infographic gives a good, and somewhat graphic (if you, like me, are squeamish) description of the most common STDs broken down by gender. I found the last section, Additional/Intriguing Facts About STDs, to be the most interesting as it illuminates the cultural response to STDs. Apparently, only 1/3rd of individuals with an STD shared that personal detail with their sexual partner before intercourse. Scary. [via]
