When the Earth decides to take out its anger on man, it can get very ugly, and today’s infographic is proof of this.
Today’s infographic scans throughout history to find the world’s worst natural disasters of every type. From earthquakes to tsunamis, civilization has seen it all. Today we will look at the absolute worst of the worst.
We can’t talk about the worst of the worst without mentioning the Great Chinese Famine of 1959 to 1961. While most don’t typically think of a drought + famine as a natural disaster, this disaster is actually the deadliest ever, causing the loss of between 30 to 45 million(!) lives due to starvation. The legitimacy of this being an actual ‘natural’ disaster is debated, as the government of the People’s Republic of China had a hand in various mishandling of the entire debacle. But one thing is for sure, this disaster did some serious damage.
Another natural disaster that many fear is that of a tsunami. The deadliest tsunami in history was the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004, which ravaged the area of its namesake. The total death toll was 280,000 people, with the total energy of the tsunami equaling about five megatons of TNT.
The two disasters I described do not do this infographic justice, so be sure to read the rest to learn more about the havoc mother nature can inflict on humans.
